Facial implants are effective in correcting facial asymmetry and deficiencies in certain areas of the face, naming the chin, the cheeks, and the jaw. Patients may choose to have facial implants for a variety of reasons, including the correction of a facial deformity or the restoration of youthful proportion to facial structures that have been altered by the effects of time.
The most common type of facial implant is an artificial chin, which is placed to correct a receding jawline and enhance overall facial aesthetics. They help patients with a large nose find a more pleasing aesthetic balance.
After numbing the area, an incision is made either inside the mouth or under the chin, and the silicone elastomer implants are positioned in front of the jawbone. In total, the process takes less than an hour to complete.
Immediately following the procedure, patients may experience some swelling. Drugs to alleviate pain can be provided for those who need it. Patients may find it difficult to speak or smile for a short time following surgery, but this is usually only temporary. Patients should plan to take at least one to two days off work. However, many patients resume normal daily activities within the first week.
The majority of people who get facial implants report feeling better about themselves afterwards. Facial implants are designed to last a lifetime, but there is a small chance of implant fracture in the event of facial trauma.
