The initial consultation
A rhinoplasty consultation will comprise a discussion regarding your expectations, overall health and lifestyle. You should be prepared to discuss: reasons for treatment, how you would like to see your nose improved, existing medical conditions, current medication, personal and family history and any prior facial surgeries.
What to expect
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and on an outpatient basis. There are two types of rhinoplasty:
In an open rhinoplasty, incisions are made across the columella, which is the tissue between the nostrils.
In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made on the inside of the nose where scarring is unnoticeable. After the incisions are made, excess tissue is removed while bone and cartilage are sculpted to provide a more attractive shape. A closed rhinoplasty is sometimes preferred because of a decreased operative time, less swelling and postoperative healing.
What to expect after
“After the procedure, your nose will be bandaged to reduce swelling and a splint will be used to provide support. You may experience some soreness during the first few days after surgery for which pain medication can be prescribed. Recovery time, meanwhile, varies: most patients can return to work after one week,” says Dr. Trelles.
You can enjoy your new look within a week of your surgery but as the healing process is gradual, it can take up to a year to see the final results of your rhinoplasty.
