Male Rhinoplasty Gains Popularity

Elective rhinoplasty becomes number-one procedure among men worldwide

Recent studies indicate that a third of rhinoplasties or nose surgeries are performed on men. A rhinoplasty can correct structural deformities in the nose, which cause impaired breathing. It is also popular among individuals who are not happy with the size or shape of their nose and want to make it more symmetrical.

“One of the most important aspects of rhinoplasty in males is to maintain masculinity to the nose and not give a feminine appearance. The male nose should not have a pinched nasal tip as this may give the appearance of an operated nose and unnatural result,” explains Dr Trelles, plastic and laser surgeon at state-of-the-art dentistry, plastic and aesthetic laser surgery clinic Vilafortuny.

So are you a candidate?

You may be a candidate for rhinoplasty if you:

  • Are at least 13 years of age.
  • Are dissatisfied with the size or shape of your nose.
  • Have breathing problems associated with structural deformities of the nose such as a deviated septum.

“It is important to realise that there are limitations to the procedure. For example, trying to achieve a perfectly symmetrical nose is impossible as human faces are naturally asymmetrical to some extent,” notes Dr Trelles.

The initial consultation

A rhinoplasty consultation will comprise a discussion regarding your expectations, overall health and lifestyle. You should be prepared to discuss: reasons for treatment, how you would like to see your nose improved, existing medical conditions, current medication, personal and family history and any prior facial surgeries.

What to expect

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and on an outpatient basis. There are two types of rhinoplasty:

Open rhinoplasty

In an open rhinoplasty, incisions are made across the columella, which is the tissue between the nostrils.

Closed rhinoplasty

In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made on the inside of the nose where scarring is unnoticeable. After the incisions are made, excess tissue is removed while bone and cartilage are sculpted to provide a more attractive shape. A closed rhinoplasty is sometimes preferred because of a decreased operative time, less swelling and postoperative healing.

What to expect after

“After the procedure, your nose will be bandaged to reduce swelling and a splint will be used to provide support. You may experience some soreness during the first few days after surgery for which pain medication can be prescribed. Recovery time, meanwhile, varies: most patients can return to work after one week,” says Dr. Trelles.

You can enjoy your new look within a week of your surgery but as the healing process is gradual, it can take up to a year to see the final results of your rhinoplasty.
