Invisalign: The ‘clear’ alternative to traditional metal braces

  • Do you feel self-conscious about the alignment and positioning of your teeth?
  • Perhaps you dislike a crooked tooth that is noticeable when you smile?
  • Do you wish you had straighter teeth that fit better on top of each other when you bite down?

If a beautiful, straighter smile is what you are looking for, then you have come to the right place. You might have heard about orthodontic treatment such as invisible braces, also known as clear braces or adult braces and wondered if it could work for you. Invisalign invisible braces are a new technology in dental braces and offer a discreet solution to teeth straightening, making it a good alternative for braces for adults who prefer not to wear traditional metal braces.

What is Invisalign treatment?

Owned by Align Technology, Invisalign® is tooth straightening system endorsed by dentists and orthodontists from around the world. Using clear, invisible plastic aligners it can successfully treat a variety of orthodontic concerns, which include teeth which are crooked, crowded or have gaps between them. Depending on the treatment course prescribed, a series of customised clear acrylic aligners are used to align the jaws and straighten teeth over a period of time. These clear plastic retainers fit snugly over the teeth and are not noticeable to the untrained eye, which is why they are often described as ‘invisible braces’.

“Not only are the aligners invisible but they are also removable so you can eat and drink what you want during your treatment. In addition, this makes brushing and flossing less of a hassle. This system can be used to treat front and back teeth and is suitable for teenagers and adults, making it a popular solution,” comments Dr Kathrin Trelles, founder of Vilafortuny.

What to expect from Invisalign treatment

You might have wondered how Invisalign works to result in tooth movement. Invisalign® straightens teeth using custom-made aligners created uniquely for a patient. The aligners gradually and gently shift teeth into place. Unlike with braces, there are no metal brackets that attach to the teeth or wires to tighten on a regular basis, which are known to cause braces pain and discomfort. Instead, Invisalign aligners have a minimal impact as the aligners are so comfortable, our patients are able to wear them for the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day without much effort.
Each clear aligner is part of a set, where a new aligner would be worn for approximately every two weeks until the treatment is complete. Invisalign treatment time varies from patient to patient, depending on the amount of movement required for optimal alignment and straightening of the teeth.

Looking after your removable retainers during treatment

During Invisalign teeth straightening treatment, it is important to prioritise your oral hygiene. You need to brush and floss your teeth, avoid eating and drinking with your retainers in your mouth and clean your retainers on a regular basis. This will prevent plaque build-up inside the Invisalign tray and keep your breath fresh.
