Neck Lifts Combat Adverse Effects of Gravity, Weight Fluctuations & Sun Exposure

An anti-ageing procedure that helps to remove excess fat and loose skin from the neck area

Having a well-defined chin, neck and jawline are important factors in defining your appearance. Unfortunately, the neck is one of the first places where symptoms of aging show. Factors such as gravity, weight fluctuations and sun exposure can make the neck age faster. A neck lift can help combat this.

“The sagging and wrinkled appearance of the neck can be improved through a neck lift. Often combined with a facelift, this procedure can noticeably improve the lower face and neck by eliminating the appearance of loose skin and fat deposits, while tightening the neck muscles,” explains Dr Trelles, plastic and laser surgeon at state-of-the-art dentistry, plastic and aesthetic laser surgery clinic Vilafortuny.

So are you a candidate?

Patients undergo a neck lift to improve one or more of the following conditions:

  • Bands and creases on the neck.
  • Fat deposits in the neck.
  • Loose or hanging neck skin.
  • A double or triple chin.

The initial consultation

“During your initial consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss expectations, desires and potential outcomes. Your plastic surgeon will evaluate your body and ask questions about your health and lifestyle,” says Dr Trelles.

He further notes that during this consultation, patients should be prepared to discuss: reasons for the treatment, expectations and existing medical conditions to evaluate if a neck lift is necessary. Additionally, patients will need to stop smoking and refrain from taking any anti-inflammatory medication four weeks prior to the procedure.

What to expect

To perform the procedure, the surgeon will make inconspicuous incisions in the neck and lower face, and utilise liposuction to permanently remove deposits of fat. After the desired amount of fat is removed, excess skin will be excised and the neck muscles will be tightened to a more attractive contour. The surgeon will then sculpt your neck to produce a more youthful appearance and will then close the incisions.

“Vilafortuny performs neck lifts on an outpatient basis,” notes Dr. Trelles. “We have plastic surgeons that are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. An ABPS board-certification requires advanced fellowship training and demonstrated expertise in plastic surgery.”

Dr Trelles further advises to expect the following:

Anaesthesia will be administered immediately prior to and during your procedure. Choices of anaesthesia include intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia – your plastic surgeon will recommend the best choice for you.

What to expect after

“After the procedure, your neck will be bandaged with a compression garment to reduce swelling and provide support. You may experience some soreness during the first few days after surgery – pain medication can be prescribed to help ease these symptoms. It is important to keep your head in an elevated position to ensure a safe recovery. Most patients can return to work after a week, but strenuous activity is not recommended for the first two weeks following the surgery,” says Dr Trelles on what to expect after the procedure.

The final results of your neck lift surgery will become apparent over the weeks following the procedure, as swelling and bruising subside. Your neck and chin will appear slimmer and more youthful, resulting in improved self-confidence. As long as you maintain your weight and protect your skin when it is exposed to sunlight, your new look should be long-lasting.
