Fat Grafting Delivers Natural, Long-Lasting Restoration

This popular, non-invasive cosmetic solution can rejuvenate gaunt, aged skin

As you age, you gradually lose some of your body’s underlying fat reserves that give the skin its youthful appearance. Due to this loss of fat tissue, many people often appear older than they actually are. To combat this, many people opt for a cosmetic non-invasive procedure known as fat grafting.

“Rather than undergoing invasive procedures, some individuals choose fat transfer treatments because of its effectiveness and minimal recovery time. Fat grafting removes fat from one part of the body and injects it into another to restore a youthful look,” explains Dr Trelles, plastic and laser surgeon at state-of-the-art dentistry, plastic and aesthetic laser surgery clinic Vilafortuny.

So are you a candidate?

Candidates for fat transfer have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Decreased volume in the breasts or buttocks.
  • Sunken cheeks or facial wrinkles due to ageing.
  • Scarring or indentations in the skin.

“It is necessary for patients to be in good health with adequate body fat before the procedure,” adds Dr Trelles.

The initial consultation

The first step in a fat grafting procedure is a consultation, which will comprise a discussion regarding your expectations, your overall health, any prior surgeries that you may have undergone and your lifestyle. Your questions and concerns will also be addressed during this consultation.

What to expect

After local anaesthesia has been administered, the surgeon will remove fat cells from the chosen area with a small needle. The fat is then harvested and then injected into the target area using a needle. There is no risk of an allergic reaction as the patient’s own tissue is being injected.

What to expect after

“After the procedure, bandages will be applied to the body parts that have been injected. You may experience some redness and swelling during the first few days but it will subside over time. It is recommended that you do not sit or lay on your hips or breasts if the fat transfer has been performed on these areas. Recovery time, meanwhile, varies: most patients can return to work after one week, but strenuous physical activity is discouraged for two weeks following the procedure,” says Dr Trelles on what to expect after the procedure.

The results of a fat transfer are noticeable immediately after the treatment, and appearance will improve as you recover. Once healed, most patients experience improved confidence. Results of a fat transfer are long last but follow-up treatments may be required to achieve the best possible results.
