Male Otoplasty Can Reset Protruding Ears for Improved Appearance

Surgeons have long noted the psychological impact of protruding ears: the shape, size or positioning of the ears can have a significant impact on the self-esteem of many boys and men. Ear-pinning surgery, also known as an otoplasty, reduces the size of the ears, reshapes them or resets protruding ears so that they sit closer to the head.

“Otoplasty is designed to bring better proportion to ears, thereby improving aesthetic balance. The surgery is often performed in children with prominent ears, but is also very effective in older patients who would like to improve the appearance of their ears,” explains Dr Trelles, plastic and laser surgeon at state-of-the-art dentistry, plastic and aesthetic laser surgery clinic Vilafortuny.

So are you a candidate?

Candidates for ear surgery include:

  • Children whose ear cartilage has reached at least 75% maturation (usually between five and eight years old).
  • Adults who would like to reduce the appearance of prominent ears.
  • Patients who suffer from lack of self-confidence due to disproportionately shaped ears.

What to expect

The surgeon will make a small, hidden incision behind each ear and re-sculpt the cartilage, moving it closer to the head. The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, and it usually takes about one to two hours to complete.

What to expect after

“After the procedure, your ears will be bandaged to reduce swelling and you will be fitted with a soft headband to wear during sleep. Most patients can return to work one week after surgery, but it is important that the ears are protected from harm for several weeks following the surgery,” says Dr Trelles.
