Otoplasty is performed to correct disproportions in the ear’s appearance. Dr. Trelles, a plastic and laser surgeon at the cutting-edge Vilafortuny clinic specializing in dentistry, plastic and aesthetic laser surgery, explains that while the procedure is commonly used to correct prominent ears in children, it is also highly effective when used on adults.
Anyone who meets the following criteria may be a candidate for ear surgery:
Infants and kids with fully developed ear cartilage (usually between five and eight years old).
People over 18 who are self-conscious about their oversized ears.
Individuals who lack confidence as a result of having abnormally shaped ears.
When repositioning the ears closer to the head, the surgeon will make a tiny incision behind each ear. It takes about an hour to two hours to complete the procedure, depending on whether local or general anesthesia is used.
After the procedure, you’ll have your ears bandaged to prevent swelling, and you’ll be given a comfortable headband to wear to bed. Dr. Trelles says that most patients can go back to work a week after surgery, but that they must take special care to protect their ears for several weeks afterwards.
