Reducing Wrinkles, Redness, and Scars with a Laser Is a Quick Procedure with Little Recovery Time

Laser skin therapy serves a variety of purposes, is safe for all skin types, and results in more supple, younger looking skin with very little recovery time. Wrinkles are diminished as a result of the laser’s ability to heat the dermal layers and stimulate collagen regrowth. Dr. Trelles, a plastic and laser surgeon at the cutting-edge Vilafortuny clinic that offers cutting-edge dentistry, plastic and aesthetic laser surgery, explains that the heat also dilates capillaries, which reduces redness.

The terms aesthetic laser and cosmetic laser are often misused interchangeably when referring to the types of treatments practices and med spas offer, but in fact cosmetic lasers and aesthetic lasers could not be more different.

While the root words “cosmetic” and “aesthetic” both refer to an individual’s external physical appearance, it is important to make a clear distinction between the two when referring to any type of laser device. The industry lets consumers down time and time again with the inconsistency in terminology, leaving laypeople confused and susceptible to gimmick products; not to mention leaving potential clients on the table for your med spa, practice, or clinic. Cosmetic laser devices fail to compare to the consistency, effectiveness, and safety of an aesthetic laser system.

A cosmetic laser refers to any product available in consumer market, advertising to treat a dermatological condition with a light source. Any “do it yourself” cosmetic laser device and most products dubbed cosmetic lasers are not actual lasers, but use a type of less-potent, pulsed light technology.

An aesthetic laser is a federally regulated medical devices which may only be operated by a certified medical professional or properly trained technician.

Aesthetic lasers are the big guns of the beauty industry; the most robust treatment option short of traditional surgery. In the hands of a properly trained professional, aesthetic lasers are highly effective for treatment of the following:
  1. Dermal resurfacing: photo-damaged skin, scarring, acne, other inflammatory skin diseases
  2. Benign pigmented lesions
  3. Removal of traumatic, decorative and cosmetic tattoos
  4. Hair removal
  5. Vascular abnormalities such as port wine stains, hemangiomas and other lesions
Safety is paramount in the conversation about aesthetic laser systems.

Aesthetic laser treatments are safe and effected when performed by a properly trained professional that must demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
  • Proficiency in wound healing and repair.
  • Proficiency in understanding basic physics and safety issues relating to the use of lasers.
  • Familiarity with the various modalities of sedation and anesthesia for cutaneous laser therapy.
  • An understanding of and the ability to treat/manage possible complications such as infections, pain, pigmentary changes, poor wound healing, excess swelling and scarring.
  • An understanding of and the ability to identify appropriate clinical indications and contra-indications to laser surgery and other energy-based therapies.
  • Proficient in the evaluation and management of treatment options related to laser medicine.

Multiple varieties of laser therapy exist, including:
THE LASER
Wrinkles can be treated quickly and safely with THE LASER Laser, a noninvasive laser treatment.

Most patients only need a couple of treatments, and the benefits should start to show within a week. In three to four days, patients make a full recovery.

THE FRACTIONAL LASER
When dealing with deep wrinkles and sun damage, the Fractional laser is the way to go.

Preparation for the procedure involves injecting a local anesthetic. The Fractional laser only needs to be used once to produce the desired effects. The skin needs at least five days to heal before it can be exposed to the elements.

THE FUSION
This laser therapy makes use of a number of Fractional devices in one treatment.

Deeper, more stubborn wrinkles can be effectively treated with this potent technological combination.

SHOCKINGLY BRIGHT PULSED LIGHT (IPL)
Brown age spots and broken blood vessels are just two of the many skin issues that can be remedied with this laser treatment.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) can also be used as a photo facial treatment to make the skin look younger and healthier. The procedures take little to no time and are completely painless.
