If you meet the criteria below, you may benefit from rhinoplasty.
possess a minimum age of 13
Aren’t happy with the size or shape of your nose.
Experience difficulty breathing because of an abnormality in the nose’s structure.
You should have a good idea of how you want your nose to look, but also know that there are constraints to the procedure. Human faces are naturally asymmetrical, so it would be impossible to achieve perfect symmetry in features like the nose.
The first step in getting a rhinoplasty is the consultation, during which you and your surgeon will talk about your goals, your health, and your daily routine. During this consultation, your questions and concerns will be addressed, and you should come prepared to talk about your reasons for treatment, how you’d like your nose improved, your expectations, any preexisting medical conditions, including allergies, current medication, personal history, and any previous facial surgeries.
Typically, rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that requires general anesthesia. When it comes to rhinoplasty, you can choose between two distinct procedures:
Open rhinoplasty
Cuts are made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils).
Closed rhinoplasty
Since the incisions are made inside the nose, any resulting scarring will be nearly invisible. After incisions are made, the patient’s bone and cartilage are reshaped while any excess tissue is removed. The incisions are closed using sutures.
Less time is spent in surgery, and less time is spent recovering and dealing with swelling when a rhinoplasty is performed in a closed fashion.
Your nose will be splinted for support and bandaged to reduce swelling after the procedure. It’s normal to feel some discomfort in the days following surgery; your doctor can prescribe pain medication to help. Meanwhile, recovery time differs from patient to patient. Most patients can return to work after one week, but strenuous activity should be avoided for four to six weeks or until incisions heal.
While the majority of the changes from rhinoplasty should be visible within a year, you will be able to fully appreciate your new appearance about a week after surgery.
